Tadpole Care +/- 4 Weeks: Some Questions?

Neighbor kids gave some tadpoles to my children. Okay with me because the tadpoles were living in a puddle which I imagine will dry up soon. Some questions:

1) How delicate are they? I read to change 1/4 of their water every week – the kids can go to the puddle for now – but, when the puddle dries up, can I go to a nearby lake? Will different water screw up their ecosystem (or whatever it is) and kill them?

2) I haven’t looked at the puddle myself. There must be some kind of nutrition in it – do the kids need to give them extra food? The neighbor kids said “dried lettuce,” but I have read just lettuce and also hamburger (but that might be later on, when they’re older). Any experience with this?

3)If you know anything else interesting or cautionary I’d love to hear it.

Thanks!!!!

they look like circles with eyes and long little tails right now, so from picture comparison I’d put them at about 4 weeks.

1. If you purchase spring water from a super market, they’ll thrive just fine in it. Don’t use any tap water, as that tends to be chlorinated and fluoridated. Tadpoles don’t like that.

2. Places like Petco or Petsmart will sell tadpole food, and you could just use that, however, hamburger will work as well.

3. Make sure to keep them in a large enough container so that they don’t resort to cannibalism for space. Aquatic plants might also be a sound investment, to keep the water oxygenated.
